Untitled Quilt – 16

About the Artist
Sarah Nishiura is a Chicago based quiltmaker who utilizes traditional techniques to craft quilts out of recycled and vintage materials. A descendent of both immigrant master carpenters from Japan, and accomplished quilters from Southern Illinois, Sarah’s quilts are both a personal creative outlet, and an expression of her love of craft and its role in everyday people’s lives. As the organizer of community quilting projects, Sarah sees quilting as a way to engage with, and learn about, the diversity of the communities in which we live. Her quilts have been exhibited at numerous museums and galleries including the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and the Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago, and were featured at the Yokohama Quilt Fest in Yokohama, Japan in fall 2014. A community quilt created by Sarah and people from the Edgewater neighborhood is on permanent view at the Edgewater Branch of the Chicago Public Library as a part of the City of Chicago’s public art program.
